Our children barely know that they existed and still less measure what we owe to the men of the Piron Brigade . Yet they gave the best period of their lives for our freedom. Their story is beautiful, and even romantic in some ways. It speaks of a field of honor, of pugnacity, of victories torn from courage and will. It is the one they left us in their memories. The Belgian and English archives reveal another part of this adventure. In 1940, they had to disobey the orders to surrender and impose their existence to the Pierlot government. Some people mutinied to fight the occupier. Resisting and indignant from the first hour, they floated a Belgian flag victorious from Normandy in the heart of the Reich through the liberation of Brussels and two rugged campaigns in Holland. When peace returned, the heroes were reproached with their stripes won on the battlefield by a hierarchy returning from the prison camps, where she had quietly allowed herself to be locked up. Black sheep for having been a pugnacious minority in a majority subjected to the victor, the soldiers of Piron were not recognized to the height of their merits. Hugues Wenkin reviews the history of these extraordinary men after an investigation he carried out in their footsteps from Gibraltar to London and from Caen to Arnhem.
